The alarming reports of a possible collapse in insect communities has highlighted our lack of knowledge of abundance and diversity of invertebrates. Even less is known about trends in space and time. The Soutpansberg elevational transect aims to address this gap by monitoring insects and spiders on a biannual basis along an elevation transect across the highest point of the Soutpansberg mountain. The transect recently celebrated it’s 10-year anniversary and now represents one of the longest temporal sequences of insect and spider abundance and distribution on earth. The study also provides a space for time substitution that will allow for the prediction of climate change effects.
