The project aims to revive indigenous and local knowledge of sustainable forest management practices, alongside ecological research to inform planting and management programmes to restore degraded riverine forests on community rangelands. In the Vhembe District of the Limpopo Province we have used participatory mapping exercises and ecological surveys to engage rural communities to understand to explore how forests are used by local people and to identify key priorities and visions for their land and forests. Through the creation of these maps, we develop dialogues with the community to reflect on social-ecological changes that have impacted the land and to develop new visions for the management of indigenous forests into the future.
